What is a Handyman?
* A Handyman is a term referring to a person competent in a variety of trade skills, inventive/ingenious repair, and maintenance work. The term often describes someone who is paid for the application of these skills around the home.
Why should I use a handyman?
* The most common reason to use a handyman is to save money, but another good reason is most contractors, plumbers, carpenters and electricians just don't want to bother with the "small" jobs.
What kind of work do handymen perform?
* Some handymen are more skilled than others and perform more than just general repairs. A good handyman is skillful, dexterous, practical, clever, able, competent, and proficient in whatever it is they are doing.
Do I purchase the materials or do you?
* Materials are either provided by you, or you may opt to have us purchase them for you. We always strive to find the best deal for the dollar without compromising quality. Keep in mind, you will pay for time (hourly rate) we spend acquiring your materials. If materials are below industry standards it could end up taking more time to install and costing more in labor. Please note though that we won't buy decorative materials such as tiles or wallpaper. For that, after all is a personal choice/decision there are so many different styles and such a wide price range that it's impossible to provide an accurate quote. For example, if we are asked to quote for tiling a bathroom, the quote will include the cost of the labor to prepare the walls then tile them and for all the basic materials - spacers, adhesive and grout - but not for the tiles themselves. If you want to pick out your materials and give us the information, we can pick it up for you.
Materials won't fit in my car. Can I put on 'will call' and have you pick them up for me?
* No problem. Simply pick out your materials, pay for the merchandise, and either provide us with the receipt for pickup, or advise the store to allow pickup by Shenandoah Valley Handyman Services. We will deliver the materials to you, and do the installation work to complete your project. You will pay for time (hourly rate) we spend picking up the materials.
Do you work by the hour, or by the project?
* Small repair work, requiring 1-8 hours is usually done 'by the hour' plus cost of materials.
* Larger projects, with many steps (i.e. dry time for primer, paint, drywall spackle, etc) are more cost effective if bid as a 'project'. Our 'labor' bid will not change unless requirements change during the project.
Sometimes when doing a project we find hidden damage such as wood rot or hidden wires or pipes that will need to be changed. The 'material' estimate may be higher/lower, depending upon the actual cost because of price fluctuation. Keep in mind, you will pay our hourly rate for any additional time required.
Do you do commercial work - i.e. Retail Stores?
* We work with several retail maintenance and property management companies who dispatch us for minor repair work and installations etc. Their clients include department stores, specialty shops and apartment complexes located in the Shenandoah Valley area.
If I provide a list, and show you what I need - do I have to be home while you do the work?
* Many of our customers feel comfortable leaving us a key or arranging access to their property, so we can handle their requests while they are at work, away or living out of the area. Our business is built on trust and honesty that can be confirmed by our references.
I live in another state, but own property in the Shenandoah Valley - can you work with my tenant to resolve some repair issues?
* Quite a few of our rental property owners live out of the area or in another state. Upon request, we arrange with tenant (if applicable) to do approved repairs/upgrades. We invoice the owner, who pays us with a check by mail or credit card from our SECURE PAYMENTS page.
Can you do some repairs to my condo, and bill the HOA for the work?
* In order to do so, we need HOA approval. Upon receipt of an approved work order from the association, we will arrange w/condo owner to do the work and submit our invoice to the HOA for payment.
Why do so many other handymen NOT show up or fail to return my calls?
* Handyman services sometimes consists of an unemployed guy with a truck and some tools, trying to get by, wanting to make a quick buck. Many aren't running an actual business, likely require cash payment only, and do not take the job seriously. We hear stories all of the time about 'no shows' 'lack of responsiveness' or 'unfinished work' from these types of handymen. If a warranty repair is needed they can no longer be found and you end up paying a lot more in the end. Remember you get what you pay for!
I have an emergency - can you help me NOW!
* We do our best to assist in emergency situations. We will re-arrange our schedule to accommodate, if at all possible.
Are you a licensed and insured contractor?
* Shenandoah Valley Handyman Services is a licensed contractor in Shenandoah County. We work legally with a business license and are fully insured. If you need a licensed state contractor for larger projects we would love to provide you with a referral.
Do you work on weekends (Saturday and/or Sundays)?
* Yes, we work 7 days a week including holidays if an emergency arises. Weekend appointments are available if needed and do book up quick, so it is best to plan ahead if services are needed on Saturday or Sunday afternoon (we do attend church).
When is payment due on my handyman project?
* For contracted projects, payment is broken up into three installments. One third is due at contract signing, second third is due at job start, and final payment is due upon completion. For hourly (time and materials) projects, payment is due upon satisfactory completion of the work.
Do you invoice for services rendered?
* Yes, we will invoice if (upon completion of a service call) payment is not possible in person. Such as property owners living out of the area.
Do you take checks or only cash? How about credit cards?
* Cash, Checks, Credit Cards and PayPal

* We cover the following areas: Shenandoah County - Woodstock - Toms Brook - Strasburg - Edinburg - Mt Jackson - New Market - Basye - Frederick County - Middletown - Stephens City - Winchester - Warren County - Front Royal - Clark County - Berryville - Boyce - Rockingham County - Timberville - Broadway - Harrisonburg - Page County – Luray - and nearby surrounding areas.
How soon can I get an appointment?
* We work by a schedule, which varies from week to week. Sometimes, same day service is possible. Typically, we can schedule an appointment for the same week. During heavy work load periods it can take several weeks. Customers do not like it if we leave in the middle of a project.
